If you live in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk or anywhere else in Hampton Roads, you've probably heard neighbors complain about their home internet. This is a plain-English look at whether Starlink is worth checking for your address: where it can help, where it can't, and what to check before you order.
These are general complaints, not measurements. Your street may be different.

Starlink is satellite internet that can reach places where wired options are limited. Geostationary satellite services like Hughesnet and Viasat sit much farther from Earth, which shows up as higher latency (delay). Here are US medians from Ookla's Speedtest data.

Fair warning: wired fiber and cable are typically faster and lower-latency than satellite. If you have a good wired option at your address, compare it. Starlink is mainly worth a look where wired options are limited or poor.

I used to live in Kempsville, in the Alexandria neighborhood near Orchard Square. Year after year my Cox bill went up and the outages kept coming. Starlink's Residential service starts at $55 a month, according to starlink.com/residential (checked October 8, 2026). The plans listed there start at $55 for Residential 100 Mbps, $85 for Residential 200 Mbps and $130 for Residential Max, per month. Starlink says there's no upfront hardware cost in select areas, and some high-demand areas add a one-time demand surcharge, so enter your exact address on starlink.com to see your real price.
Starlink says its kit comes with everything you need to get online in minutes. You connect the dish to the router, use the Starlink app's Check for Obstructions tool to pick a spot with a clear view of the sky, and join the STARLINK Wi-Fi network. If trees block the view from the ground, a roof, wall or pole mount will take longer.
Starlink's Residential plans are named for their top speeds: 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps and Max, which Starlink lists as up to 400+ Mbps. Starlink says these are maximum available speeds, are not guaranteed, and will be slower during times of congestion. The chart on this page shows independent US median speeds.
Only if the dish can get a clear view of the sky. Starlink says tree branches, poles or roofs that block its view may cause service interruptions, and it recommends that people in heavily obstructed areas check before ordering. Use the Check for Obstructions tool in the Starlink app from where you'd put the dish; a roof, wall or pole mount can sometimes clear the trees.
Yes: Starlink's Residential page offers a 30-day trial with a full refund if you're not satisfied. Starlink's return policy says a return started within 30 days gets a refund for the hardware and the first month of service, not including shipping, and kits returned after 30 days get no refund. If you bought the kit from a retailer or reseller, you return it to them.
